The Boston Celtics have established a pattern in their recent playoff runs. They consistently engage in lengthy series, struggle when playing at home, but excel when on the road. While it remains uncertain if they can alter the first two aspects, in Game 3 against the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Celtics ensured that their road success would continue. Through a precise defensive effort and impressive performances from Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, the Celtics secured a 106-93 victory, granting them a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series. Tatum expressed their determination to bounce back from a subpar Game 2 and viewed this game as an opportunity to showcase improvement and resilience. Over the past three seasons, the Celtics have maintained a balanced record of 14 wins and 14 losses in 28 home playoff games, which is the most games played without achieving a winning record in NBA history, as reported by ESPN Stats & Information. However, despite their struggles at home, the Celtics have managed to reach the NBA Finals in 2022 and the conference finals last season. This year, they are considered favorites for a deep playoff run due to their impressive 17-7 record on the road.
Following a lackadaisical performance in their Game 2 defeat, which included a defensive display deemed “unacceptable” by Brown, the Celtics elevated their game on both ends of the court on Saturday, securing another road victory. This marked their fifth consecutive postseason win, dating back to last year’s playoffs.
Tatum and Brown spearheaded the team’s efforts, collectively contributing 61 points – with Tatum scoring 33 and Brown adding 28. The Celtics showcased their shooting prowess, hitting 51.2% of their field goals and converting 13 of their 34 attempts from beyond the arc, resulting in a 38.2% success rate.
Brown emphasized the importance of unity and effort, stating, “We need everyone to be on the same page and give their best effort. That’s 85% of the battle right there. If we come out with intensity, play hard, and synchronize our efforts, the rest will fall into place. We possess enough talent in the locker room to overcome any team.”
However, Brown acknowledged the potential pitfalls of disunity and lackluster effort, cautioning against complacency. He stressed the significance of pre-game preparations, film analysis, and communication among teammates to ensure a focused mindset. Brown emphasized the team’s collective commitment, stating, “We’re not here to play around.”
The primary focus was on Boston’s defensive intensity, which was evident throughout the game. Despite Donovan Mitchell’s impressive 33-point performance, the Celtics managed to control the game by limiting the scoring opportunities for the rest of the Cleveland team.
Apart from Mitchell and Evan Mobley, who scored 17 points but struggled with mobility due to an injury in the third quarter, the remaining Cavaliers players combined for 43 points on 17-for-51 shooting, with a poor 5-for-23 from beyond the arc.
Mitchell acknowledged the team’s struggles in finishing shots, especially around the rim, and emphasized the need to capitalize on open looks. The Celtics now aim to replicate their strong road performance in Game 4 to secure a chance to close out the series at home, avoiding any lapses that could give Cleveland an opportunity to bounce back.
Brown emphasized the unpredictability of the playoffs and stressed the importance of maintaining defensive intensity in Game 4 to prevent any surprises and secure a favorable outcome.
